The John Stephen Story:
John was first involved with Nuriootpa Hockey Club in the early nineties when he moved with his family to the Barossa Valley. Hockey was always a family affair for the Stephen family and together with wife Sue and three children Levi, Courtney and Dale, John was always present on game days and active behind the scenes.
Bringing his specialist spreadsheet and accounting skills to the table John was first involved in the committee in 1992 as Vice President & Treasurer. This kicked off an impressive 14 years as treasurer of either Nuriootpa Hockey Club, or the Barossa Valley Hockey Association. He was responsible for improving the maturity & governance of our financial reporting and to this day acts as auditor for the BVHA books.
John was also a member of the Artificial Turf Action Committee which formed with the purpose of building an artificial turf in the Barossa, and played a crucial role in setting us up with a sustainable financial model to support the significant investment in facilities.
John took the field for the first time in 1997, joining his 3 children on game day donning the green and gold. He played 4 years in the B grade men’s team, taking home a premiership in 1997.
