The Sue Stephen Story:
Sue is the type of volunteer that club presidents dream about – she gets things done!
Sue has been involved with the Nuriootpa Hockey Club since the early nineties when she moved, with her family, to the Barossa Valley. Along with her husband, John, and three children, Levi, Courtney and Dale she was a regular on game days from the early hours of the morning, right through to the last game.
You will struggle to find a volunteer who has committed more hours to hockey than Sue. Whether it is hands on as minkey coordinator, junior coordinator, junior umpire coordinator or coach for the club and the BVHA; or behind the scenes – writing and re-writing constitutions, by-laws and policies and improving the governance of our sport – Sue has done it.
Not only a tireless volunteer for Nuriootpa Hockey Club, Sue is also heavily involved in the Barossa Valley Hockey Association where she was awarded a Life Membership in 2002. Sue was the driving force behind many innovative programs in the BVHA including the Junior Umpire Program and the Gender Equity Plan which culminated in a girls only U14 competition and was a finalist in the Prime Ministerial Women and Sport awards in 1995.
There is not much Sue doesn’t know about our club – in fact she literally wrote the book! Sue researched, wrote and published the Nuriootpa Hockey Club story to commemorate our 20 years - an important and irreplaceable part of our history.
Sue joins June Young in being awarded Life Membership without having played a game for the club.
Sue has played a big part in making Nuriootpa Hockey Club the professional, respected and successful club it is today.
