The Mark (Schutty) Schutz Story:
Mark’s involvement with NHC commenced in 1978 as a player in the inaugural men’s team. Schutty was strongly involved in the club from day one, serving on the committee from 1982 to 2000 holding numerous roles including treasurer and BVHA delegate. Mark and his late mother Betty managed the canteen for almost a decade and along the way making many friends and thousands of dollars for our club.
As a player, Schutty was one of the best fullbacks to ever play for Nuri and in the BVHA. He had a great trap, solid tackle and excellent hit – he was always the back-up man to a sliding goalkeeper.
The need to test his skills in the Adelaide competition took him away to the Barossa Valley Hockey Team from 1987 - 1990.
After his return to Nuri, coaching was where he excelled, for the next 15 years Mark he actively coached from U9 to U16 teams, he also coached the A-Grade Women for 6 years to win 6 Premierships.
After Grand Finals, a previous centre forward, decided to commence burning something of Schutty’s. 1982 was the Duck that Schutty had in his car. 1983 was his Jocks. In 1992 the A-Grade Men’s Premiership winning Captain-Coach decided (in the Stocky Hotel) to trim and roll-up and then smoke Schutty’s beard. This really did happen. Schutty as always took it in good spirits.
Almost all of the Junior players that Mark coached, went on to play Senior hockey and most became excellent A-Grade players. They all had very good skills with many making State teams along the way.
In 2004 the Club introduced an Annual Perpetual Trophy – The Schutty Award for Coaching, a wonderful tribute to an enthusiastic, loyal and committed coach.
As an inaugural member of NHC, Mark has been a loyal servant, player, competitor, clubman, committeeman and a great friend to all.
